A challenging start.
Departure from the sports center of Bormio, altitude 1225 m. Once you leave the sports center, take the Sp 29 towards S. Caterina Valfurva, the 12 km that separate Bormio from S. Caterina take us to an altitude of 1,734 meters. Here begins the climb to P.sso Gavia. The first time of P.sso Gavia on the Tour of Italy dates back to 1960. Legendary stories have been told about this climb with epic feats by the runners.
The climb from Santa Caterina to the top of the pass has a difference in height of 900 meters with an average gradient of 6.5% for 13 km. The passage to the Gavia pass at 2,621 meters. Descent towards Ponte di Legno to be done very carefully, narrow road and without protections.
From Ponte di Legno, the road descends to Monno, where the Mortirolo ascent begins, another mythical ascent of the tour of Italy. From this side, even if considered less demanding, the slopes are respected. Almost 13 km of ascent with an average gradient of 7.6%. The arrival of the stage at the Mortirolo pass at 1,852 m is located at the stele of the pass 200 m to the right after the crossroads on the road towards Mazzo
